The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has taken decisive disciplinary action following controversies that marred the closing stages of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, announcing suspensions for two high-profile players and imposing financial penalties on both Senegal and Morocco.

In a statement released after a review of reports from match officials and CAF disciplinary bodies, the football governing body confirmed that Achraf Hakimi of Morocco and Malick Thiaw of Senegal have been suspended for misconduct related to the AFCON 2025 final and surrounding incidents. CAF also imposed fines on the Senegalese and Moroccan football federations for breaches of competition regulations.

The sanctions bring a formal close to one of the most dramatic tournaments in recent AFCON history, while also reopening debates about discipline, officiating, and player conduct at Africa’s biggest football event.

What Led to CAF’s Decision

CAF said its disciplinary committee reviewed multiple reports from referees, match commissioners, and video evidence following heated exchanges during and after the AFCON 2025 final. While the final itself was closely contested, emotions spilled over in the aftermath, with confrontations involving players, team officials, and referees.

According to CAF, Achraf Hakimi was cited for “unsporting conduct and improper behavior” toward match officials, while Malick Thiaw was sanctioned for actions deemed to have violated the tournament’s code of conduct. The exact length of the suspensions was not immediately specified in public detail, but CAF confirmed that both players will miss upcoming international fixtures under CAF’s jurisdiction.

CAF stressed that the measures were not punitive for punishment’s sake, but necessary to uphold discipline and protect the integrity of African football.

Fines Imposed on Senegal and Morocco

Beyond individual sanctions, CAF also fined both Senegal and Morocco for what it described as “collective breaches” related to team conduct. These include failures to adequately control players and officials during tense moments surrounding the final.

While the financial penalties were not described as excessive, CAF made it clear that repeat offenses could attract heavier sanctions in future tournaments, including points deductions or match bans.

Officials from both countries acknowledged receipt of CAF’s decision. Neither federation immediately announced whether it would appeal the ruling, though sources close to both camps suggested consultations were underway.

CAF’s Message on Discipline and Respect

CAF’s intervention comes amid growing scrutiny of discipline at major football tournaments across the continent. In recent years, the governing body has faced criticism over inconsistent refereeing standards and player reactions to officiating decisions.

In its statement, CAF emphasized that respect for match officials remains non-negotiable, especially during high-stakes fixtures like the AFCON final.

“AFCON represents the highest standard of African football,” CAF said. “Players and teams must conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the values of the game, regardless of the pressures involved.”

Reactions Across Africa

The suspensions of Achraf Hakimi and Malick Thiaw have generated mixed reactions among fans and analysts. Supporters of Morocco expressed disappointment, arguing that Hakimi’s passion was misinterpreted, while Senegalese fans questioned whether Thiaw’s punishment was proportionate.

Football analysts, however, largely agree that CAF had little choice but to act.

“CAF needed to send a clear signal,” said one former international referee. “If emotions after a final are allowed to spiral unchecked, it sets a dangerous precedent.”

Impact on Upcoming Fixtures

The suspensions could affect both players’ availability for key World Cup qualifiers and continental matches later in the year. Hakimi, a central figure in Morocco’s tactical setup, and Thiaw, who has become an important defensive option for Senegal, will now have to sit out crucial games.

Coaching staff in both camps are expected to adjust their squad plans accordingly.

A Tournament of Highs and Controversies

AFCON 2025 delivered thrilling football, packed stadiums, and memorable performances, but it also reignited long-standing concerns about officiating, discipline, and post-match conduct.

CAF’s handling of the final fallout may shape how future AFCON tournaments are managed, especially in terms of disciplinary enforcement.

As African football continues to grow in global profile, the pressure on CAF to balance passion with professionalism has never been greater.

Looking Ahead

With sanctions now confirmed, attention shifts to whether Senegal and Morocco will challenge the fines or suspensions, and how CAF will enforce similar standards going forward.

For now, the AFCON 2025 final will be remembered not only for the football played on the pitch, but also for the disciplinary reckoning that followed.
