For the fourth time in 2024, Nigeria’s power grid has collapsed, with the country’s electricity generation plummeting to a mere 0.80 megawatts.
The power generation started to decline around 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, dropping from an average of 3,417.99 megawatts at 1 p.m. to 2,797.16 megawatts by 2 p.m., according to the Independent System Operator (ISO), an autonomous arm of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The situation worsened further, with electricity contribution falling to 1,020.08 megawatts by 3 p.m., and then dramatically to just 0.80 megawatts by 4 p.m.
During this period, the Trans-Amadi Power Plant was the only plant generating power, contributing the meager 0.80 megawatts to the grid.
This marks the fourth collapse of Nigeria’s power grid in 2024, highlighting the ongoing challenges in the country’s power sector.
