The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has announced the suspension of duties, tariffs, and taxes on the importation of certain food items through land and sea borders. This move is in line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive aimed at addressing food insecurity in Nigeria.
Agriculture Minister Abubakar Kyari revealed the suspension at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday. The food items affected by this suspension include maize, husked brown rice, wheat, and cowpeas.
Kyari stated, “The 150-day duty-free import window for food commodities includes the suspension of duties, tariffs, and taxes for the importation of maize, husked brown rice, wheat, and cowpeas. Imported food commodities will be subject to a Recommended Retail Price (RRP).”
He emphasized that the government’s action will not compromise food safety standards. In addition to private sector imports, the Federal Government will directly import 250,000 metric tons of wheat and 250,000 metric tons of maize. These imported food items will be aimed at supplying small-scale processors and millers across the country.
