Monarchs, leaders, and stakeholders of the South-South region have urged the governors of the six states in the zone to prioritize unity and set aside personal political interests that have hindered progress in the past. They specifically called on Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State and Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, the senior governors among them, to foster cohesiveness and galvanize the four new governors for the collective growth of the region.
The stakeholders expressed dissatisfaction with the previous conflicts among governors in the region, particularly citing the strained relationship between former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and other South-South governors. They also noted that former Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade distanced himself from his counterparts, hindering the pursuit of the BRACED Commission’s mandate.
The stakeholders emphasized the importance of the East-West Road, Bonny-Bodo Road, port development, and the Ogoni Cleanup, among other crucial infrastructure projects that require unified efforts. They urged the governors to learn from the mistakes of the past and work together to provide effective leadership for the South-South Governors Forum, ensuring the region’s collective interests are represented.
The call for unity and cooperation among the governors received widespread support from various stakeholders, including traditional rulers, community leaders, and political figures. They emphasized the need for a united front to address the challenges facing the region and pursue its developmental goals.
The stakeholders also suggested reactivating the BRACED Commission, which was established by the six oil-producing states, to facilitate integrated development in the region. They emphasized the importance of setting aside personal and partisan interests for the overall benefit of the South-South.
The stakeholders further advised the governors to focus on regional integration, reviving the BRACED states’ concept, and positioning the South-South as an investment hub. They emphasized the need for strong institutional bridges, mass enlightenment of political officeholders, and the transition to a knowledge-based economy.
Overall, the stakeholders emphasized the importance of unity, cooperation, and strategic planning among the South-South governors to ensure the region’s progress and the well-being of its people.
