The Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Mr Adeoye Aribasoye, has announced the legislative body’s readiness to pass a law prohibiting smoking in public places. Speaking in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, during a visit by leaders and members of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Aribasoye emphasized that both smokers and non-smokers are affected by public smoking. He also reiterated the state government’s zero tolerance for drug and substance abuse among youths.
The Speaker called on parents and stakeholders to collaborate with the state government in combating the menace of drug abuse, stressing that drug abusers would face legal consequences. He emphasized the importance of collective efforts to campaign against drug abuse, urging everyone to become ambassadors in the fight against this societal problem.
Aribasoye further revealed that the state is working on a law to prohibit smoking in public places. He highlighted that public smoking not only affects the health of smokers but also poses risks to non-smokers who should be protected from the adverse effects of secondhand smoke.
The statement by the Speaker reflects the commitment of the Ekiti State House of Assembly to address the issue of drug abuse and create a healthier and safer environment for all residents.
