The first half ended goalless as both sides struggled to break the deadlock. However, the second half sprang to life when Dani Olmo capitalized on Lamine Yamal’s pass to give Spain a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute.
Germany fought back, and in the 89th minute, Florian Wirtz leveled the score with a close-range finish, sending the match into extra time.
The game seemed destined for penalties until substitute Mikel Merino became the hero for Spain. In the dying moments of extra time, Merino produced a thumping header from Dani Olmo’s cross, securing the win and sparking celebrations among the Spanish supporters, while the German fans were left to rue their missed opportunities.
Spain’s victory was marred by a late red card for Dani Carvajal, who was sent off after receiving two yellow cards. He will miss the semi-final clash alongside Robin le Normand, who was also booked during the match.
Spain will face the winner of the France vs. Portugal quarter-final in the semi-final on Tuesday.
