The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) FCT Command has arrested a woman, Precious Yusuf, for attempting to smuggle drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja.
According to a statement released on Wednesday by the Command Public Relations Officer, Samson Duza, Yusuf was apprehended on Tuesday, July 9, while posing as a visitor to an inmate.
During a routine search by officers at the centre, items suspected to be Indian hemp and other dangerous drugs were discovered concealed in food packs within a carton.
Duza reported that the suspect admitted to being sent to deliver the contraband to an inmate at the custodial centre.
The FCT Command Controller, Ibrahim Usman, has directed that Yusuf be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.
Usman issued a warning to drug peddlers, urging them to refrain from attempting to smuggle illicit substances into custodial centres under the pretense of visiting inmates. He emphasized that officers and personnel are vigilant and prepared to thwart such efforts.
He also called on the public to support the NCoS in its reformatory mission to maintain societal safety and assured that those legally interned would be kept in secure custody.
