Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Sokoto Catholic Diocese has called on the Federal Government to enforce the provision of freedom of religion and worship, particularly in Northern Nigeria. He emphasized the need for the government to provide places of worship for adherents of different faiths in federal establishments, as stipulated in the constitution and other laws of the land.
Speaking to journalists after the inaugural Mass at the Catholic Chaplaincy of the Nigeria Air Force’s 119 Composite Group in Sokoto, Bishop Kukah highlighted the lack of provisions for places of worship for Christians in many federal establishments in the North. He emphasized that this is a violation of the constitutional provision on freedom of religion and worship.
The bishop urged the government to address this issue by ensuring that places of worship are provided for people of all faiths in federal institutions. By doing so, the government would uphold the constitutional rights of individuals to freely practice their religion.
Bishop Kukah’s remarks highlight the importance of religious freedom and the need for equal treatment of all religious groups in Nigeria. Ensuring that individuals have access to places of worship regardless of their faith is a fundamental aspect of protecting religious rights and promoting social harmony.
