Football fans in Enugu State have commended the Super Falcons of Nigeria for their qualification to the round of 16 of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Nigerian female national team qualified after playing a scoreless draw with Ireland on Monday in the last group B, match.
The draw was enough to see them through to the round of 16 placing second behind co-host Australia who crashed the hope of Canada by a 2-0 defeat.
Osmond Eze, a football fan, said the falcons were determined and resolute having beaten Australia earlier.
“I commend the girls for their doggedness. They defeated Australia in front of their fans and now they have qualified for the round of 16. It is a good outing for the girls,” said.
For Beatrice Nwosu, a female athlete, the Falcons were brilliant to have curtailed the rampaging Irelanders.
“At a stage, I held my breath, especially in the first half and towards the ending part of second half.
“They did the job that they were supposed to do. They can now rest a bit as we are entering knockout stages where the winner takes it all, ” she said.
Also, Bright Nwachukwu, a football enthusiast, hailed the team’s spirit, saying it had seen them through to the next round.
“I really commend their mentality game after game but I want to advise the coaching crew to really work harder on the girls.
“Though they scratched a draw today, they were not convincing; so, a lot need to be done if they are to advance beyond the round of 16.
