The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the federal government to reverse the recent fuel price hike or face a nationwide strike action starting from August 2, 2023.
The NLC expressed its dissatisfaction with the government’s response to the subsidy issue, particularly the announcement of a N8,000 palliative to alleviate the impact on Nigerians. The congress had previously criticized this amount, considering it an insult and mockery.
During the NLC’s Central Working Committee meeting at Abuja Labour House on July 25, the decision to commence a nationwide strike was approved. Consequently, the NLC directed all its affiliate unions and state councils to begin mobilizing workers for the upcoming strike and mass protests.
Further details on the specific demands and plans for the strike action will be made available at a later time.
