A gas explosion in a residential building on Cachol Street in the Ojo area of Lagos State has caused a fire outbreak. The incident took place in the early hours of Saturday, July 15, when a camp gas exploded in the eight-room bungalow.
According to Amodu Shakiri, spokesperson for the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, the explosion occurred while an occupant of the building was cooking in the corridor. The fire department received the call at around 9:05 am and was able to contain the fire to the building, preventing it from spreading to adjoining structures.
Shakiri mentioned that the building was severely burnt, and it was discovered that the passage was being used as a kitchen. Several camp gas cylinders were found in the building, contributing to the intensity of the fire.
The intervention of officers from the Ojo military cantonment prevented the incident from turning fatal. They protected the firefighters while they carried out their duties.
Although the fire resulted in the destruction of many properties, there were no casualties reported, and the occupants of the building escaped unharmed.
Gas explosions have been a recurring issue in Lagos, with recent incidents causing damage and injuries. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has called on the state government to conduct regular safety drills and enforce safety measures for gas handling to prevent further tragic incidents.
