Amidst a protracted crisis within the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor Siminalayi Fubara presented the N800 billion Appropriation Bill for the 2024 fiscal year. The controversial assembly, currently comprising four members, has been mired in factional conflicts and defections.
Governor Fubara handed over the budget to the assembly led by Edison Ehie, who was removed from his position as House Leader for refusing to support an attempt to impeach the governor. This move comes a day after Mr Ehie’s faction obtained a court order allowing them to conduct legislative business without interference.
The Rivers State Assembly, with a total of 31 members, faced a crisis that erupted in late October when some lawmakers sought to impeach Governor Fubara. The internal strife, stemming from a political feud between the governor and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, escalated, leading to parallel sittings and a divided assembly.
The recent defection of 27 members from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress further intensified the rift. Martin Amaewhule leads the faction backed by Mr. Wike, while Edison Ehie’s faction remains loyal to Governor Fubara.
Governor Fubara’s presentation of the budget to the four-member assembly appears to be influenced by the recent court order obtained by Mr. Ehie’s faction, granting them the authority to conduct legislative proceedings independently. The situation underscores the deep-seated political and legislative challenges facing Rivers State.
