As part of efforts to ease travel costs during the festive season, President Bola Tinubu has approved a 50% reduction in road transport fares and free train rides for Nigerians traveling for Christmas and New Year celebrations. The announcement was made by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

  1. Discounted Road Transport Fares:
  • The 50% reduction in road transport fares applies to interstate vehicles transporting passengers to their home states and towns for the Christmas and New Year holidays.
  • The aim is to alleviate financial burdens on Nigerians, enabling them to travel and reconnect with family and loved ones.
  1. Free Train Rides:
  • Free train rides will be provided across all classes of trains operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation.
  • The initiative is part of the government’s strategy to offer cost-free travel options for the public during the holiday season.

Duration of the Policy:

  • The transportation subsidies will be in effect from December 21 to January 4, 2024.

How to Obtain Your Free Train Ticket:

  • The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has specified that tickets will not be issued at any train stations.
  • Passengers are advised to obtain their free tickets via the online e-ticketing platforms provided by the NRC.
  • It is crucial to note that no commuter will be allowed to board the train without a ticket.
  • Commuters are urged to follow security personnel’s instructions and adhere to the laid-down boarding procedures at the station and on board the trains.

Designated Train Routes:

  • The free train rides will be available on four designated routes: Lagos-Ibadan, Abuja-Kaduna, Warri-Itakpe, and Ido-Ijoko.

President Tinubu’s initiative aims to make holiday travel more accessible and affordable for Nigerians, fostering connectivity and shared celebrations during the Christmas and New Year period. Passengers are encouraged to plan ahead and secure their free train tickets online for a seamless travel experience.
