In a dramatic turn of events, a suspected car thief, Abubakar Mohammed, narrowly escaped being lynched by an angry mob at the Kure Ultra Modern Market in Minna, Niger State. The 40-year-old suspect, a resident of Tudun-Fulani, Bosso Local Government Area, allegedly attempted to steal a Honda Civic car with the registration number KAG 371 AA from the market’s park.
Eyewitnesses reported that the suspect’s actions triggered the anger of the mob, but he was eventually rescued and arrested by prompt police intervention. During interrogation, Abubakar confessed to using a fabricated key to remove the vehicle from the car park, intending to take it to a receiver named Bashir Mohammed in Kaduna.
The suspect revealed that he had previously stolen a red Honda Civic from the same market in March 2023, selling it to the same Bashir in Kaduna for N200,000. He claimed to have used the proceeds for a shoe business in Kano State, expressing his motivation for the theft as the need for more money for farming and building a personal house in Wushishi.
The Niger State Police Command, responding to a distress call, rescued the suspect and is currently investigating the case at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna. Efforts are underway to arrest Bashir Mohammed, the alleged receiver of stolen vehicles, in Kaduna.
