The Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olukayode Egbetokun, has summoned a group of officers who were allegedly involved in running over a man with an SUV in Edo state. The decision was made following the circulation of a viral video on social media that captured the incident, showing police officers driving a Sienna vehicle over a handcuffed individual.
The incident took place on Thursday in Ekpoma, Edo state. According to reports, the victim had been handcuffed by a team of officers from the Ekpoma Police Division after he refused to allow them to search his mobile phones.
In a statement issued on Friday, the police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, conveyed the IGP’s condemnation of the act and confirmed that the officers involved have been instructed to report to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Monday.
“The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has condemned the disturbing incident where a police team ran a vehicle over a citizen on Thursday, June 29, 2023, in Ekpoma, Edo state,” the statement read.
Furthermore, the IGP has ordered the officers, who have been detained in Edo state, to appear at the Force Headquarters for further actions.
The statement reassured the public, especially the residents of Ekpoma, to remain calm, as the current leadership of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) will not tolerate such acts of unprofessionalism and illegality.
