Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has implemented measures to mitigate the impact of the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government. As part of these measures, the governor announced an increase in the minimum wage for workers in the state to N40,000 during a strategic stakeholders meeting in Owerri.
Governor Uzodimma also revealed that the state government would provide a N5 billion soft loan to farmers, aiming to enhance agricultural productivity in the state. In addition, the governor outlined various other initiatives designed to alleviate the hardships faced by the people of Imo State across different sectors.
Expressing concern for the suffering of low-income earners following the removal of fuel subsidy, Governor Uzodimma emphasized his commitment to addressing the situation. He stated that there would be an immediate upward review of salaries and wages, with the minimum wage set at N40,000. The governor also mentioned the possibility of discretionary, consequential adjustments for other salary levels.
It should be noted that President Bola Tinubu had removed subsidy payments on petrol during his inauguration on May 29, 2023. Consequently, the pump price per litre of petrol increased from N184 to over N500.
