In a dramatic political shake-up, Kenyan President William Ruto has dissolved his entire cabinet, with the exceptions of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Affairs. This decision follows widespread protests against the controversial Finance Bill 2024, which was withdrawn in June.
According to sources, President Ruto’s move is aimed at reshuffling the government to address current political tensions and discontent. In his announcement, President Ruto said, “I have, today, in line with the powers given to me by Article 1521 and 1525B of the Constitution and Sections 12 of the Office of the Attorney General’s Act, decided to dismiss with immediate effect all the Cabinet Secretaries and Attorney Generals of the Cabinet of Kenya, except the Prime Cabinet Secretary, the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Affairs, and of course, the office of the deputy president is not affected in any way.”
The President’s decision is seen as an effort to restore stability and build a new, broad-based government. President Ruto plans to engage in extensive consultations across different sectors and political formations to form a new cabinet that can address the growing discontent and political instability in the country.
