The Oyo State Police Command has ordered an investigation into allegations of unprofessional conduct by officers handling a kidnapping case in Afijio Local Government Area, leading to disciplinary action against senior personnel attached to the Jobele Division.

The development followed protests by residents of the area who accused police officers of mishandling a suspect linked to a recent kidnapping incident in the community.

According to the police authorities, the Oyo Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, has queried the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Jobele Division and ordered the detention of a police inspector pending the outcome of the investigation.

The disciplinary measures come after public outrage over the alleged release of a suspect who had earlier been apprehended by local residents in connection with kidnapping activities in the area.

Protest Over Rising Kidnapping Incidents

The controversy erupted after residents blocked the Ibadan–Oyo expressway at the Jobele axis, disrupting vehicular movement and demanding urgent intervention by security authorities.

Community members said their protest was triggered by an attempted kidnapping attack on a woman, who narrowly escaped after scaling a fence while being pursued by suspected criminals, Kidnapping in Oyo.

Although the victim escaped the kidnapping attempt, she reportedly sustained a deep machete wound during the attack, highlighting the violent nature of the incident.

Residents said the incident was only the latest in a series of kidnapping attacks affecting communities in Afijio Local Government Area.

According to community leaders, the local government area has recorded several kidnapping incidents in recent months, raising fears among residents about the safety of their communities, Kidnapping in Oyo.

Community Vigilance and Arrest of Suspect

Following the attempted kidnapping, residents reportedly organized community patrols in an effort to protect their neighbourhoods from further attacks.

During one of the vigilante patrols, locals apprehended a suspicious individual allegedly found with dangerous weapons including a gun and a cutlass.

Residents said the suspect was handed over to the police at the Jobele Police Station for investigation and prosecution, believing that law enforcement authorities would take appropriate action.

However, the situation took a dramatic turn when community members later visited the station and discovered that the suspect had been released without explanation, Kidnapping in Oyo.

The alleged release of the suspect triggered widespread anger among residents, who interpreted the action as a sign of negligence in the fight against kidnapping and banditry in the area.

Road Blockade and Public Outrage

In response to the development, angry residents, including youths and students, blocked major roads in the area, including the Old Oyo–Ibadan road and the Ibadan–Oyo–Ogbomoso highway.

The protest effectively halted both human and vehicular movement as demonstrators demanded accountability from the police.

Many protesters insisted that they would not reopen the road until authorities explained why the suspect linked to the kidnapping case had been released.

Community leaders also called on the Nigeria Police Force and the Oyo State Government to urgently address the rising kidnapping threat in Afijio Local Government Area.

Police Respond With Disciplinary Measures

Reacting to the controversy, the Oyo State Police Command announced that it had commenced a thorough investigation into the actions of officers involved in the case.

Police spokesperson DSP Olayinka Ayanlade confirmed that the officers attached to the patrol team had been subjected to disciplinary procedures.

According to the police statement, the Assistant Superintendent of Police who led the patrol team and the Divisional Police Officer have been queried, while the inspector allegedly linked to the incident has been detained pending investigation.

The police command stated that the investigation would determine whether there was any misconduct or breach of professional standards in the handling of the kidnapping case.

Authorities also assured residents that any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action, Kidnapping in Oyo.

Growing Kidnapping Concerns in Oyo

The incident highlights growing concerns about kidnapping and other violent crimes in parts of Oyo State, particularly rural communities where criminal gangs have increasingly targeted residents.

Security experts warn that kidnapping has become one of the most serious threats to public safety across several regions of Nigeria, including parts of the Southwest.

In Afijio Local Government Area, residents say insecurity has reached worrying levels, with some victims sustaining severe injuries during attacks.

Community representatives disclosed that the area had recorded at least seven kidnapping incidents in recent times, underscoring the scale of the security challenge, Kidnapping in Oyo.

Police Assure Residents

Despite the tension generated by the incident, the Oyo State Police Command has assured residents that the investigation into the alleged misconduct will be transparent and thorough.

Authorities also urged the public to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible intelligence that could help track down criminal groups responsible for kidnapping attacks in the region.

For residents of Jobele and neighbouring communities, however, the expectation remains clear: stronger security measures and renewed confidence in the ability of law enforcement agencies to combat the growing threat of kidnapping.
