Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the 2023 governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State, along with six others, has submitted a letter to the Lagos State House of Assembly, urging the commencement of impeachment proceedings against Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The grounds for this call are cited as “abuse of office and misappropriation of state resources.”
In the letter dated December 14, 2023, the concerned individuals, including Rhodes-Vivour and representatives from various groups, raised allegations related to the purported payment of N200 million for the governor’s personal legal fees and the provision of furniture for a party secretariat. They emphasized that the gravity of these allegations warrants immediate attention and action by the State House of Assembly.
The letter, addressed to the Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, highlighted the importance of elected officials adhering to high standards of ethical conduct and governance. The group expressed its belief that, if proven true, the actions outlined in the allegations constitute grounds for impeachment.
Given the urgency of the matter and the potential impact on the welfare of Lagos State residents, the group implored the Lagos State House of Assembly to prioritize the issue, conduct a thorough and impartial investigation, and initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Sanwo-Olu.
The letter acknowledged that impeachment proceedings require careful consideration and due process but urged the Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Obasa, to uphold its constitutional duty to safeguard the interests and well-being of the people.
It’s worth noting that Rhodes-Vivour had previously alleged in November that the state government paid four law firms N50 million each to defend Governor Sanwo-Olu’s election victory, as indicated in a document shared on his verified social media handle.
