The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning to Nigerians regarding a batch of unwholesome Sprite 50cl glass bottles that are currently circulating in the country. The alert comes after the agency received a consumer complaint and conducted an investigation through its post-marketing surveillance unit.
According to NAFDAC, the investigation revealed that over five crates of the implicated batch of Sprite 50cl glass bottles were contaminated with particles. To ensure public safety, the agency has taken several measures in response to the discovery. The affected batch has been sampled for laboratory analysis at the NAFDAC laboratory, and the agency has instructed its zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct surveillance and recall the implicated batch of the product.
In addition, NAFDAC will carry out a comprehensive inspection of the manufacturing site to determine the root cause of the contamination and ensure compliance with marketing authorization. The manufacturer of the product is the Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (Abuja plant) with the AZ6 22:32 batch number. The batch was manufactured on April 4, 2023.
NAFDAC has urged distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and vigilance, and to avoid consuming, selling, or distributing the unwholesome product. They should carefully check the authenticity and physical condition of the product. Individuals in possession of the affected batch of Sprite 50cl glass bottles are advised to submit their stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.
Furthermore, NAFDAC has encouraged anyone who has consumed the product or experienced any adverse reactions after consumption to seek immediate medical advice from a qualified healthcare professional. The agency is committed to ensuring the safety of food and beverages in Nigeria and will continue to carry out surveillance and monitoring activities to protect the health of the public.
