The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has reassured that its ongoing Borikiri-Okrika Road project will not conflict with the Ring Road being constructed by the Rivers State Government. This statement comes amidst concerns about potential overlaps or clashes between the two major infrastructure projects in the state.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara recently signed an agreement for the construction of the multibillion naira Port Harcourt Ring Road with Julius Berger, which is set to traverse six local government areas of the state, including Okrika. The N195.3 billion project has already seen 77% of the total contract sum released to the contracting firm for the commencement of the job.
Addressing the issue, the NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, highlighted that the Borikiri-Okrika Road project, awarded in 2012 at a value of about N16.7 billion, has likely experienced cost variations over the years. The NDDC is currently in discussions with the contractor and consultant to ascertain the reviewed cost and variations.
Dr. Ogbuku emphasized the NDDC’s commitment to completing the project and avoiding any potential conflicts with the state government’s Ring Road project. He also mentioned ongoing discussions with the state government to explore possible partnership opportunities in completing the road project.
The Managing Director further revealed that the contractor and consultant have assured the NDDC that the project could be completed within two years if funds are made available. The NDDC is equally determined to complete the project within the same timeframe.
This assurance comes as a relief to stakeholders in Rivers State, as both the NDDC and the state government’s infrastructure projects are vital for the region’s development. With clear communication and collaboration, these projects can complement each other and contribute to the improvement of transportation and overall development in the state.
