In a significant twist to the recent interception of a Motor Tanker (MT) VINNALARIS 1 LAGOS engaged in crude oil theft, the Nigerian Navy has leveled accusations against Tantita Security Service (TSS), suggesting possible complicity in the illegal operation.
The vessel, apprehended by the Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Igbokoda, Ondo State, was caught red-handed siphoning crude oil from a wellhead off the coast of Awoye riverine community. With 17 crew members onboard, the MT VINNALARIS 1 LAGOS had become a focal point in the Navy’s ongoing efforts to curb maritime illegalities.
Commodore Adedotun Ayo-Vaughan, the Director of Naval Information, disclosed that the Awoye riverine area, proximate to the site of the arrest, falls under TSS coverage. This revelation led to the Navy’s suspicion of Tantita’s involvement in the illicit activities. Ayo-Vaughan dismissed TSS’s subsequent claims as “false alarms,” deeming them both unfounded and mischievous.
Despite the accusations against Tantita, the Nigerian Navy maintains its steadfast commitment to its constitutional mandate of safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime environment from illegal activities. The recent operation underscores the Navy’s determination to combat crude oil theft and other maritime offenses, contributing to national economic development and prosperity.
The Navy spokesperson warned that the force would employ all legitimate means to track down and apprehend individuals or entities involved in such illegalities. Ayo-Vaughan also appealed to the public for cooperation, urging prompt reporting of any criminal activities, especially in coastal communities.
According to him, it is believed that Tantita Security Service (TSS) is involved in these illegalities because Awoye riverine area which is close to the place of arrest is covered by TSS.
“Again, it was upon the arrest of the vessel by the Nigerian navy that TSS began to raise false alarm, totally unfounded and indeed mischievous.
“Nonetheless, the Nigerian navy remains resolute in the pursuit of her constitutional mandate for the protection of Nigeria’s Maritime Environment for national economic development and prosperity,” he stated.
