Twitter’s recent policy of restricting the number of tweets users can read in a day has led many Nigerians to seek an alternative microblogging platform, resulting in a migration to Truth Social.
Although Twitter has since rescinded the policy, it has not deterred users from exploring Truth Social as an alternative option.
Truth Social was created by former U.S. President Donald Trump after he was permanently banned from Twitter for allegedly inciting the rioters who attacked the U.S. Capitol in January 2021.
Prior to Twitter’s restrictions, Truth Social was not widely popular among Nigerians. However, as Twitter users encountered difficulties logging into the app due to the limitations, Truth Social gained prominence.
Mocking Twitter, Truth Social stated, “Reminder: On Truth Social, you can read and post as many truths as you want – all for free.”
The development has prompted reactions from Nigerians, with some sharing their experiences on the Truth Social platform.
@MrBlackOG mentioned that “Truth Social has crashed due to a high number of Twitter refugees invading the app.”
@BOGbadams invited others to join him on Truth Social, while @gimbakakanda expressed skepticism about the platform’s association with Donald Trump, known for promoting far-right extremism.
@MissPearls indicated her enthusiasm for the platform, stating, “My mentions on Truth Social are going wild already even before I posted my first truth. So, that’s it; it’s either Twitter or Truth.”
As Nigerians seek alternatives to Twitter, Truth Social has gained attention, with users exploring its features and engaging in discussions on the platform.
