Nigeria experienced another collapse of its national grid on Monday, leading to a significant drop in power generation from 4,032.8 megawatts to 43.5MW within an hour. The collapse occurred around 1 pm local time, and power generation figures obtained from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) showed a gradual recovery throughout the afternoon.
The spokesperson for TCN, Ndidi Mbah, confirmed the grid collapse but assured that the system had been restored by TCN engineers. She stated that the collapse occurred at 1:49 pm and was fully restored by 6:51 pm on the same day.
“The grid experienced a collapse today (Monday). Presently, it (supply) has been restored except for the Jos axis, which will soon have supply within the hour. The collapse happened by 13.49pm this afternoon. It is now fully restored by 18.51pm,” she stated.
Nigeria has witnessed multiple grid collapses in recent months, leading to widespread blackouts across the country. The issues plaguing the national power grid have raised concerns among power consumers, who criticize the government for the frequent disruptions despite the privatization of the power sector in 2013. The government often attributes the grid collapses to various factors, including fire incidents and technical challenges.
