In a video shared on his Twitter handle, Simon Ekpa, the self-acclaimed leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), stated that he is exonerating their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, from any actions carried out by Biafran agitators. He emphasized that any actions taken by Biafrans for their freedom, the freedom of Nnamdi Kanu, and other prisoners of conscience should not be attributed to Kanu.
This comes after Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB, declared an end to all sit-at-home orders in the South-East and any other proposed means aimed at securing his release from detention. Kanu made this declaration in a letter authorized to his special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, during a world press conference held in Enugu.
The situation highlights the ongoing internal divisions within the IPOB and differing approaches to their struggle for Biafra’s independence. Ekpa’s statement appears to distance Kanu from any activities that could potentially escalate tensions and conflicts in the region.
In the video, he said, “The reason for us not taking orders anymore from the DSS dungeon is to safeguard our leader. We want our leader to be safe, we want to exonerate our leader from anything that Biafrans will be doing for his own best interests.
“So any actions that Biafra people will be taking in Biafra land you don’t attach Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to it. Any actions that Biafrans will be taking in Biafra land for the freedom of Biafra, freedom of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and freedom of all prisoners of conscience you do not bring Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to it.”
