The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has stated that the Nigerian Electricity Regulation Commission (NERC) has not yet issued a directive regarding the new electricity tariff that was initially scheduled to commence on July 1. The Public Relations Officer of IBEDC, Ms. Busolami Tunwase, made this statement in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan.
Tunwase clarified that she was not aware of any directive from NERC regarding the new tariff. She emphasized that it is the commission’s responsibility to handle such matters, and until IBEDC receives a directive from NERC, they will not implement any changes.
The proposed new tariff has faced criticism since its announcement, with stakeholders arguing that the timing of the increment is inappropriate given the poor service delivery by most electricity distribution companies.
IBEDC offices have experienced an influx of customers seeking to purchase energy in anticipation of the new tariff. However, due to complaints of congestion and network issues by the company, customers have been unable to make their purchases, leading to disappointment.
IBEDC will await further instructions from NERC before implementing any changes to the electricity tariff, and they will announce the commencement of the new tariff once they receive the directive.
