Barrister Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate for Edo State and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), addressed recent events and the party’s prospects in an interview, providing insights into his campaign and vision for the state.
During a visit to the Oba of Benin’s palace following the campaign kickoff led by Labour Party national leader Peter Obi, Akpata inadvertently referred to himself as a “son of the palace” instead of a “son of the soil.” The Oba corrected him, clarifying that only princes and princesses are considered sons and daughters of the palace. Akpata emphasized his deep respect for the Oba and appreciated the correction, attributing the subsequent media frenzy to political manipulation. He expressed his pride in being recognized as a true Benin son by the monarch, dispelling any doubts about his heritage.
Akpata addressed concerns about the absence of the Labour Party’s National Chairman at the campaign event, attributing it to unforeseen circumstances. He acknowledged internal issues within the party, typical during election seasons, but expressed confidence in the party’s mechanisms to resolve them.
Responding to reports that some members of the Obidients movement are supporting candidates from other parties, Akpata emphasized the democratic nature of the Labour Party. He dismissed these concerns, confident that the majority will support the Labour Party in the upcoming elections.
Akpata also tackled the contentious issue of zoning, which some argue should favor a candidate from Edo Central. He criticized politicians for exploiting such arguments to create divisions. Akpata stressed that good governance transcends tribal lines and zoning arrangements from other parties should not be imposed on the Labour Party. He assured that the Labour Party’s focus is on delivering the best candidate for Edo State.
Regarding the state’s debt profile, Akpata expressed concern over the lack of visible development despite significant borrowing. He advocated for increasing earnings and prudent spending to service debts. Akpata reassured Edo citizens that under a Labour Party administration, funds would be used to improve their lives, staying true to the party’s ethos of serving the people.
As the Edo State gubernatorial election approaches, Akpata remains optimistic about his chances and committed to his campaign promises.
