The political crisis between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has escalated as the Ogoni people, under the banner of Ogoni Development Drive (ODD), issued a threat to occupy the streets of Abuja if Asiwaju Bola Tinubu does not intervene.
In a press release signed by Comrade Solomon Lenu, the convener of Ogoni Development Drive (ODD), the group claimed to have uncovered a plan by the FCT Minister and expelled former Assembly members to heighten political tension against Governor Fubara and the people of Rivers State.
The statement expressed concern over the alleged creation of a false atmosphere of crisis, hindering peaceful governance, and deterring investors from the state. The ODD emphasized the negative impact of the political upheaval on the employment opportunities for the state’s youth.
The Ogoni group called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Nigerian public to take note of the situation. It warned that if the political tension persists and obstructs peaceful governance, causing harm to the state’s economy, the ODD would mobilize the people of Rivers State to occupy the streets of Abuja.
The ODD urged the Presidency to intervene and rein in Chief Wike, ensuring a conducive and peaceful atmosphere for governance in Rivers State, similar to other states in Nigeria. The group emphasized the need for a resolution to the political crisis that has been affecting the state.
