In a significant development for Ondo State governance, Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has assumed the role of Acting Governor as Governor Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu proceeds on medical leave. The announcement came after Governor Akeredolu formally communicated his decision to take medical leave based on doctors’ recommendations.
The communication, in line with constitutional provisions outlined in Section 190 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), was received by the Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji. The letter declared that Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa would assume the responsibilities of the Governor in an acting capacity during the medical leave, set to commence on Wednesday, 13th December 2023.
The Speaker expressed gratitude for Governor Akeredolu’s swift recovery and conveyed optimism about his return to official duties after the medical leave. The acting arrangement ensures the continued smooth governance of Ondo State, with Deputy Governor Aiyedatiwa at the helm in the absence of Governor Akeredolu.
Ogele News had reported that Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu transferred power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, ahead of another round of medical leave, following intervention by President Bola Tinubu. The transfer is in line with the Nigerian Constitution, and Aiyedatiwa will assume the responsibilities of the Governor in acting capacity. A formal letter regarding the medical leave and a notice transferring power will be sent to the House of Assembly.
