Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has issued a stern warning to troublemakers who are destabilizing the peace in Opu-Nembe, a community in the Nembe Local Government Area of the state, amidst rising insecurity. The governor emphasized that the government will not tolerate any attempts to make Nembe-Bassambiri ungovernable and that those who have been manipulating security for political gain will face consequences, regardless of their status.
The governor’s statement follows allegations made by some chiefs who claim to have been exiled from the Opu-Nembe community due to their attendance at a social event in Yenagoa. However, Chief Robert Efere, the Secretary to the Nembe Council of Chiefs, denied the accusations of targeted violence against the chiefs.
In response to the chiefs’ plea for assistance, the governor urged the security agencies to intervene promptly and come to their aid. The affected chiefs recounted the incidents that led to their exile and highlighted that even the community woman leader had faced a similar fate. They called on the government to swiftly intervene and provide them with necessary support.
The Bayelsa State Government expressed its disapproval of the ongoing promotion of violence in Opu-Nembe and issued a stern warning to those engaging in such activities. The government cautioned mischief makers to cease their actions or face legal consequences.
“Let me say this with all sense of responsibility that those who have been playing politics with security in the area will be dealt with no matter how highly placed,” he added.
