The PDP Action 2023, a group affiliated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed its support for the ambition of Aminu Tambuwal, the immediate past Governor of Sokoto State, and Senator representing Sokoto South Senatorial District, to become the Senate Minority Leader of the 10th Senate.
The PDP leadership is expected to announce the next Senate Minority Leader and other minority principal officers when the Senate resumes from the Sallah break on Tuesday, July 4th, 2023.
However, there have been efforts by certain prominent members of the PDP, including some former governors, to frustrate Tambuwal’s ambition.
The PDP Action 2023 has criticized the recent attacks on Senator Tambuwal by individuals it refers to as “traitors” who are allegedly afraid of his growing political influence as a former Speaker of the House of Representatives.
In a statement signed by Rufus Omeire, the Chairman of the group, the PDP-affiliated body accused unnamed individuals of leveling baseless allegations against Tambuwal due to his aspiration to become the Senate minority leader.
The group highlighted Tambuwal’s qualifications, noting that as a former Speaker, he outranks a Senator and possesses the necessary experience to hold the position of Minority Leader in the 10th Senate. The group questioned the motives of those opposing Tambuwal’s ambition and speculated whether they were concerned that he could impede a supposed plot for dictatorship in Nigeria.
The PDP Action 2023 praised Tambuwal’s leadership qualities and highlighted his role as the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, where he successfully united governors across party lines to speak with one voice and contribute to the nation during a period of transition.
The group also urged Senate President Godswill Akpabio not to allow destabilization in the Senate by interfering in the Minority leadership issue of the 10th Senate. Instead, they called on him to focus on assisting the President in delivering sound legislation and implementing good policies for effective governance in Nigeria during this critical period of change and leadership.
