During the 10th anniversary celebration of the Alaigbo Development Foundation (ADF) in Umuahia, Abia State, former Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, emphasized the importance of responsible use of public funds by leaders across Nigeria.
Obi condemned the misuse or diversion of public funds for personal gain, describing it as a breach of trust and criminal. Drawing from his tenure as governor of Anambra State, he highlighted his administration’s achievement of leaving over $150 million in state coffers despite clearing all debts owed to workers and contractors.
“I saw public money as not mine, but that of the people and should be used for public good,” Obi stated, urging Nigerians to hold leaders accountable and avoid sycophancy even when leaders err.
He further advised political leaders to collaborate closely with traditional rulers, seeking their wisdom and guidance. This, he believes, is crucial for effective governance and nation-building.
The event, attended by over 2,500 participants from various parts of the world, underscored ADF’s role as an intellectual and strategic powerhouse for Alaigbo (Igbo land). Founder Prof T. Uzodinma Nwala lamented the historical neglect and infrastructural deficit in Igbo land, advocating for increased investment to unlock its economic potential.
Chairing the occasion, Major General Chris Eze (rtd) commended ADF’s vision and emphasized the need for good leadership to steer Nigeria towards progress, echoing sentiments shared by ADF’s new chairman, Coleman Chukudelunzu, who pledged to prioritize the interests of Igbo land.
The anniversary celebration served as a platform for reflection on regional development and the imperative of accountable leadership in fostering sustainable growth and prosperity.
