Officers from the Ojo Division of the Lagos State Police Command have apprehended two suspects, Magnus Nwonka (42) and Imo Lawrence (35), for being in possession of counterfeit drinks. The command’s Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, shared details of the arrest in a video on his social media handle.
In the video, crates of drinks, bags of sachet water, buckets, and other items were discovered in a filthy environment. The suspects, Imo Lawrence and Magnus Nwonka, were arrested, and during the investigation, they led detectives to their inconspicuous, multi-room ‘factory.’ The police have stated that the investigation is ongoing.
This incident follows recent actions by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), which intercepted counterfeiters involved in the production of various fake beverages, including wines and soft drinks, estimated at over N750 million in the Eziukwu market in Aba, Abia state. The prevalence of fake consumer goods in markets and stores across Nigeria has become a growing concern, with Nigerians expressing their frustrations on social media.
