The Federal Government has attributed the delay in the payment of February salaries for some federal civil servants to a technical hitch in the payroll processing system, assuring workers that the issue is being resolved and payments have begun.

The explanation came amid widespread complaints from workers across several Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) who reported not receiving their February salary alerts at the expected time.

Officials at the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) said investigations showed that the delay was linked to technical issues during the salary processing stage.

The development has sparked anxiety among public servants who depend on their monthly earnings to meet rising living costs.

FG Explains Cause of February Salaries Delay

According to government officials, the February salaries delay occurred due to technical issues affecting the federal payroll system used to process workers’ payments.

The OAGF stated that the glitch disrupted the normal salary payment cycle for federal civil servants across various MDAs.

In a statement issued by the office, the government acknowledged the concerns raised by workers and confirmed that the problem was traced to technical network complications during salary processing.

Similar incidents have occurred in the past when salary payments were affected by glitches within payroll systems or banking platforms used by the government.

Authorities explained that once the problem was identified, steps were taken to restore the system and ensure that the affected workers receive their salaries.

Government Assures Workers of Immediate Resolution

Officials of the Accountant-General’s office stressed that the delay was not due to lack of funds or budgetary problems.

Instead, they described the issue as a temporary technical hitch that disrupted payment schedules.

They added that the government is working with relevant service providers and financial institutions to ensure that the failed salary payments are reprocessed immediately.

The office also appealed to federal workers to remain calm while the technical issues are resolved.

The government emphasized that the welfare of civil servants remains a priority and that the February salaries delay would soon be fully addressed.

Salary Payments Begin After System Fix

Reports indicate that the federal government has begun releasing salary payments after the technical glitch was resolved.

Workers in some MDAs have started receiving alerts for their February salary, while others are expected to receive payments as the reprocessing continues.

The government assured employees that the payroll system has been stabilized and that all outstanding payments will be cleared.

Officials added that the reprocessing of failed transactions is being carried out in batches to ensure accuracy and avoid further errors.

Workers Express Concern Over Repeated Delays

Despite the government’s explanation, some workers have expressed frustration over recurring salary delays linked to technical issues.

Labour groups have previously raised concerns that such disruptions create financial difficulties for public servants, especially in the face of rising inflation and economic pressure.

In recent years, delays in salary payments have occasionally been linked to issues in the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) and banking platforms used to process payroll.

These incidents have prompted calls for improved reliability and stronger oversight of federal payroll systems.

The Importance of Timely Salary Payments

Timely salary payments remain crucial for maintaining morale in the public service.

For millions of Nigerian civil servants, monthly wages are the primary source of livelihood, covering expenses such as housing, food, transportation and education.

Experts say that even short delays in salary payments can affect household financial stability.

Ensuring the efficiency of payroll systems is therefore essential for maintaining trust between government institutions and workers.

Looking Ahead

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that federal workers receive their salaries promptly.

Officials said that lessons from the February salaries delay will help improve payroll processing systems and prevent similar disruptions in the future.

As payments continue to reach workers, attention will likely shift toward strengthening the infrastructure behind Nigeria’s federal payroll system.

For many civil servants, however, the priority remains simple: receiving their salaries on time every month.
