President Bola Tinubu convened a high-level meeting at the Presidential Villa on Monday with stakeholders from Rivers State, led by Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The purpose of the meeting seems to be the resolution of the ongoing feud between Governor Fubara and his former political godfather, current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
The delegation, which included former Rivers Governor Peter Odili and several traditional rulers from the state, engaged with President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, among others.
The rift between Wike and Fubara had repercussions in the state legislature, with 25 lawmakers loyal to Wike defecting from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The feud also witnessed an alleged impeachment attempt against Fubara, the demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex, and the resignation of many pro-Wike commissioners from Fubara’s cabinet.
Earlier attempts by President Tinubu and other elder statesmen to intervene in the matter had reportedly failed. The meeting at the Presidential Villa indicates a renewed effort to find a resolution to the political crisis in Rivers State.
