Senator Abubakar Kyari, a seasoned politician, has emerged as the acting National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the resignation of the former national chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu. The announcement was made during an emergency meeting of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) held at the APC Secretariat in Abuja.
Born on January 15, 1963, in Borno State, Senator Abubakar Kyari comes from a distinguished background. His father, Late Brigadier Abba Kyari, served as a military administrator in the North Central region from 1967 to 1975. Senator Kyari has eight siblings.
He received his education in both Nigeria and the United States of America. He attended Capital School Kaduna for his primary education from 1968 to 1974, and Barewa College Zaria for his secondary education from 1974 to 1979, where he obtained his WASSCE in 1979.
Senator Kyari pursued higher education abroad, earning a bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) in Economics from the University of Tennessee in 1986. He furthered his studies and obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a focus on Finance from Webster University, St. Louis, Missouri, USA in 1989.
His political journey began in 1996 when he became a founding member and Protem National Secretary of the United Nigeria Congress (UNC), which later transformed into the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP). Over the course of 26 years, Senator Kyari has held various political positions.
He was elected as a member of the Borno State House of Representatives under the UNCP in 1998. Subsequently, he represented his constituency at the National House of Assembly from 1999 to 2003 as a member of the All Peoples Party (APP).
During his political career, Senator Kyari has also served as a Honorable Commissioner in Borno State. From 2003 to 2005, he held the position of Honorable Commissioner for Water Resources, and from 2007 to 2011, he served as a Honorable Commissioner in different portfolios. In the 2015 elections, he contested for and won the Borno North Senatorial seat under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
With his extensive experience in government and politics spanning over two decades, Senator Abubakar Kyari is well-equipped to lead the APC and usher in a new chapter for the party. Beyond his political career, Senator Kyari has been happily married for 32 years and is blessed with four children and a grandson.
As the acting National Chairman, Senator Abubakar Kyari will have the responsibility of guiding the APC through its internal affairs and ensuring its continued growth and success in the political landscape of Nigeria.
In October 2022, a Nigerian national honour of Commander Of The Order Of The Niger (CON) was conferred on him by President Muhammadu Buhari.
