The government of Ondo State has put forward a proposal to create 33 new Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state. This was announced by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mrs. Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, after the state executive council meeting held in Akure.
The enabling law for the creation of the new LCDAs has been sent to the State House of Assembly for enactment. Currently, the state has 18 statutory Local Government Areas, and if the proposal is passed into law, the number of local councils in the State will increase to 51.
According to the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Charles Titiloye, the proposed new LCDAs will perform the same functions as the existing 18 local governments in the state. They will operate side-by-side with the existing LGAs and have similar functions.
The approval of the proposal follows the recommendation of the Committee on LCDAs, which was set up by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and headed by Prince ‘Lanke Odogiyan. The aim of creating more local government areas is to bring government closer to the people at the grassroots level. The proposal is based on the recommendations of the 11-member committee tasked with working out the modalities for the creation of the new LCDAs in 2019.
