Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has announced several palliatives to cushion the impact of fuel subsidy removal on the residents of the state. As part of the measures, the fares for state-owned buses will be reduced by 50 percent, and commercial buses, known as “Danfo,” will reduce their fares by 25 percent. The reduction in fares will take effect from Wednesday.
In addition to the fare reduction, the governor also announced that more buses will be provided for Lagos civil servants and food distribution will be carried out for the poor through the local council development areas (LCDAs). Furthermore, there will be a 50 percent reduction in the fares for government-owned vehicles.
The move comes in response to the high cost of petroleum and the increase in the cost of living, which has prompted organized labor to threaten a strike. These palliatives are aimed at easing the financial burden on Lagos residents and providing relief during this challenging period.
“For the informal buses, they are also going to make a pronouncement today. I can say to you that we have agreed with them that they will be doing about a 25 percent reduction of fares on their buses — all of the yellow buses that we have on the street,” the governor noted.
“They will make a formal announcement maybe later today on that. That will take effect tomorrow or Wednesday.”
