Nigerian Senators have urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to consider the current plight of Nigerians and refrain from worsening their suffering by increasing electricity tariffs. During a plenary session on Tuesday, federal lawmakers expressed their concerns about the economic challenges faced by ordinary citizens and the potential adverse effects of a tariff hike on their already burdened livelihoods.
The motion, titled “Need to Halt the Proposed Increase in Electricity Tariff by Eleven Successor Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos),” was jointly sponsored by Senators Akintende Yunus Abiodun, Asuquo Ekpenyong, and Abbas Aminu Iya. The senators highlighted that the DisCos had applied to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for a “rate review” based on changes in macro-economic parameters and other factors affecting the quality of service, operations, and sustainability of the companies.
Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong emphasized that the removal of fuel subsidies has significantly affected the general price of goods and services, leading to high inflation rates. He stressed the need for policies that promote inclusivity and address the challenges faced by the most vulnerable in society, instead of increasing electricity tariffs, which would exacerbate Nigeria’s inflation crisis.
Senator Cyril Fasuyi, representing Ekiti North Senatorial District, urged his colleagues to appeal to President Tinubu to fulfill his promise to the people and halt the planned tariff hike to allow the poor to breathe.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, appreciated his colleagues for advocating for vulnerable citizens, and after a voice vote, it was determined that the majority supported the additional prayer to allow the poor to breathe.
