Erik Ten Hag has signed a one-year contract extension as the manager of Manchester United ahead of the 2024-25 season. The club triggered the extension on Thursday, keeping Ten Hag at Old Trafford until 2026.
Ten Hag, who joined Manchester United from Ajax in 2022, originally had a contract set to expire in 2025. Expressing his delight, he stated, “I am very pleased to have reached an agreement with the club to continue working together. Looking back at the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and many examples of progression from where we were when I joined.”
In his first season, Ten Hag guided Manchester United to a third-place finish and secured the Carabao Cup trophy. Despite a challenging 2023-24 season where the team finished eighth in the Premier League, Ten Hag led the club to a 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final, securing a Europa League spot.
Manchester United is expected to appoint former striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy as the assistant coach to Ten Hag in the coming days. The club’s newly-appointed Sporting Director, Dan Ashworth, expressed confidence in the team’s future, saying, “This group of players and staff have already shown they are capable of competing and winning at the top level; now we need to do it more consistently. With our strengthened football leadership team now in place, we are looking forward to working hand-in-hand with Erik to achieve our shared ambitions for this football club.”
Manchester United will open their Premier League campaign against Fulham at Old Trafford on August 16.
