The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has formally written to the United States Congress defending its 2023 presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, following allegations linking him to terrorism and religious persecution in Nigeria.

The development comes amid growing controversy surrounding a proposed United States legislative initiative that recommends sanctions and investigations targeting individuals and organisations allegedly connected to religious violence in Nigeria, Terrorism allegation NNPP writes US Congress defends Kwankwaso.

Speaking on the matter, NNPP National Chairman Ahmed Ajuji said the party moved swiftly to counter what it described as unfounded accusations against the former Kano State governor.

According to him, the party’s decision to write U.S. lawmakers was aimed at correcting what it considers a misleading narrative surrounding Kwankwaso’s role in Nigeria’s security challenges.

“We have written to the United States Congress to absolve Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso from these accusations,” Ajuji said during a television interview.

The NNPP insists that the terrorism allegation against Kwankwaso is politically motivated and lacks credible evidence, Terrorism allegation NNPP writes US Congress defends Kwankwaso.

Controversial U.S. Legislative Proposal

The controversy stems from a proposed bill introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives titled the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026.

The bill calls for the United States government to investigate allegations of religious persecution in Nigeria and to consider sanctions against certain individuals and organisations.

Among the measures proposed are:

  • Visa bans
  • Asset freezes
  • Possible designation of some militant groups as terrorist organisations.

The proposed legislation also mentions several Nigerian entities and individuals, including Kwankwaso and the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, in connection with alleged human rights violations and insecurity.

U.S. lawmakers behind the proposal argue that violent attacks in Nigeria’s Middle Belt and northern regions have resulted in thousands of deaths and massive displacement.

However, Nigerian political actors and analysts have strongly contested the inclusion of Kwankwaso’s name in the discussions, Terrorism allegation NNPP writes US Congress defends Kwankwaso.

NNPP Rejects Terrorism Allegation

The NNPP leadership has strongly rejected the terrorism allegation against Kwankwaso, describing the claims as baseless.

Party officials say the former governor’s record in public service contradicts any suggestion of involvement in extremist activities.

Kwankwaso served two terms as governor of Kano State and later represented Kano Central in the Nigerian Senate. He also emerged as the NNPP’s presidential candidate during the 2023 general election.

The party maintains that throughout his political career, Kwankwaso has consistently advocated national unity, peaceful coexistence and democratic governance.

According to NNPP officials, the terrorism allegation against Kwankwaso appears to be part of a broader political campaign to tarnish his reputation.

The party therefore decided to write U.S. Congress to clarify its position and defend the former governor, Terrorism allegation NNPP writes US Congress defends Kwankwaso.

Political Reactions and National Debate

The controversy has sparked mixed reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape.

Supporters of Kwankwaso have dismissed the allegations as a misunderstanding of Nigeria’s complex security challenges.

Some political figures argue that linking individuals to terrorism without concrete evidence risks damaging Nigeria’s global reputation.

Others believe the controversy reflects the growing international scrutiny of Nigeria’s security situation, particularly in areas affected by insurgency, banditry and communal violence.

Observers say the NNPP’s decision to write U.S. Congress represents a rare diplomatic intervention by a Nigerian political party in an international policy debate, Terrorism allegation NNPP writes US Congress defends Kwankwaso.

Implications for Nigeria–U.S. Relations

Analysts say the issue highlights the delicate balance in Nigeria’s relationship with the United States on security and human rights matters.

Nigeria has long relied on cooperation with Washington in counter-terrorism efforts, particularly in the fight against Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province.

At the same time, American lawmakers and advocacy groups have increasingly raised concerns about religious violence and human rights issues in Nigeria.

The terrorism allegation involving Kwankwaso therefore sits at the intersection of domestic politics and international diplomacy.

A Developing Political Story

As the debate continues, the NNPP insists that the terrorism allegation against Kwankwaso must be dismissed.

Party leaders say their decision to write U.S. Congress reflects their determination to protect the reputation of their presidential candidate and ensure that international discussions about Nigeria are based on accurate information.

Whether the controversy fades or evolves into a larger diplomatic dispute remains to be seen.

But for now, the move by the NNPP to write U.S. Congress signals that the party intends to challenge the terrorism allegation against Kwankwaso both at home and on the global stage.
