In a move to alleviate travel costs during the festive season, President Bola Tinubu has approved a 50% reduction in road transport fares and free train rides for Nigerians traveling for Christmas and New Year celebrations. The announcement was made by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The fare discounts will be applicable to interstate vehicles transporting passengers to their home states and towns for the Christmas and New Year holidays. Additionally, free train rides will be provided across all classes of trains operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation.
President Tinubu aims to ease financial burdens on Nigerians during the holiday season, allowing them to travel and reconnect with family and loved ones. The transportation subsidies are set to be in effect from December 21 to January 4, 2024.
Onanuga shared the details in a tweet, stating, “President Tinubu says the Federal Government will bear 50% of the transport fares for interstate road travelers during Christmas and New Year. Train rides will be absolutely free. The policy takes effect from 21 December and ends 4 January 2024.”
