In response to widespread criticism of the proposed N8,000 monthly cash transfer to vulnerable persons as a palliative measure following the removal of petrol subsidy, President Bola Tinubu has directed a review of the cash transfer policy. The announcement was made by Dele Alake, Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communications, and Strategy.
Alake stated that the government will now unveil a comprehensive package of palliatives for Nigerians. He further announced the president’s approval for the immediate release of fertilizers and grains to approximately 50 million farmers and households across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Alake emphasized that President Tinubu’s administration is committed to prioritizing the welfare and security of Nigerians. He acknowledged the concerns raised by Nigerians regarding the conditional cash transfer program and assured that the program would be reviewed based on the feedback received.
The presidential spokesman highlighted that the cash transfer program is just one aspect of the government’s relief package. He reiterated that the government has implemented a range of measures to alleviate the discomfort caused by the subsidy removal. Alake also emphasized the president’s commitment to ensuring that the approved N500 billion meant to cushion the impact of the subsidy removal would be utilized judiciously.
Furthermore, Alake assured Nigerians that the palliative measures would benefit all citizens, irrespective of their ethnic, religious, or political affiliation. He reiterated that President Tinubu is a listening leader who is dedicated to prioritizing the well-being of Nigerians.
The decision to review the cash transfer program and introduce a comprehensive palliative package reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to addressing the concerns and aspirations of the Nigerian people. The president’s administration aims to provide relief and support to vulnerable households, farmers, and the general population affected by the subsidy removal.
