The University of Abuja has taken a firm stance against sexual misconduct within its academic community, as revealed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’Allah. Two academic staff members were recently dismissed from the institution over allegations of sexual misconduct. In response to the prevalent issue of sexual harassment in Nigerian institutions, the university has set up a communication channel for students to report cases of harassment and other unethical behavior by lecturers.
Sexual harassment has been a recurring problem in Nigerian tertiary institutions, with a survey conducted in 2018 showing that 70% of female graduates experienced sexual harassment during their time at school. The main perpetrators identified were classmates and lecturers.
Despite the passage of a bill in 2021 that stipulated 21 years imprisonment for randy lecturers, most of the lecturers found guilty have only been dismissed from their positions.
In the fight against sexual harassment, the University of Abuja collaborated with NGOs to address such matters. Additionally, a recent conference on campus provided students with a platform to expose misconduct incidents. The university has also empowered students to assess their lecturers, allowing them to provide feedback on the lecturers’ performance and conduct.
This proactive approach by the University of Abuja demonstrates its commitment to addressing sexual misconduct within its academic community and creating a safer environment for all students.
