Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President of Nigeria, made a strong statement on Sunday following his appointment as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Tinubu, who was chosen during the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government in Guinea-Bissau, emphasized that coup after coup will no longer be tolerated within the West African sub-region.
Highlighting his dedication to regional integration, Tinubu outlined his priorities, including political stability, peace and security, regional economic integration, and the strengthening of ECOWAS institutions. In his address, he reiterated the significance of democracy and good governance as the foundation for peace and sustainable development.
Expressing concern over the emerging trend of coup d’états in West Africa, where armed forces have unlawfully overthrown popular mandates, Tinubu called on ECOWAS to stand firmly in defense of democracy. He asserted that democracy, though challenging to manage, is the best form of government worldwide.
Taking over from President Umaro Embalo of Guinea-Bissau, Tinubu assumed the role of ECOWAS chairman. The 63rd Ordinary Session summit marked his first engagement on the African continent since assuming office as Nigeria’s president on May 29, 2023.
