Nigeria has recorded an important diplomatic breakthrough after the Federal Government confirmed that 10 countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States and France, have now granted approval for Nigerian ambassadors nominated to serve in their capitals. The confirmation came from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, who said the agrément process is ongoing and more responses are still being awaited from other countries.

This development matters because the approval for Nigerian ambassadors is not just a bureaucratic step. In diplomacy, agrément is the formal acceptance a receiving state gives before an ambassador-designate can be posted. Without that consent, a government may announce a nominee, the Senate may screen the person, and the Presidency may be ready to move, but the envoy still cannot formally resume duty in the host country. That is why Monday’s update from Abuja is more than routine official language. It signals that Nigeria’s stalled ambassadorial process is finally moving.

According to the ministry, the countries that have so far granted approval for Nigerian ambassadors are the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Ireland, Qatar, the Republic of Benin, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Senegal and Sierra Leone. The ministry added that responses from other countries are still expected and that the date for the induction ceremony will be announced once it is finalised and approved by the Presidency.

The story also carries weight because Nigeria has spent a long period without substantive ambassadors in many missions abroad. The Guardian reported that since President Bola Tinubu came into office in May 2023, fresh appointments were delayed, leaving key missions to be managed largely by chargés d’affaires. That situation drew concern from stakeholders who argued that the absence of full envoys could weaken Nigeria’s diplomatic visibility, bilateral engagement and strategic representation in major capitals. In that light, the latest approval for Nigerian ambassadors is being seen as a corrective step after a long and uncomfortable vacuum.

The background to this process stretches back many months. Reuters reported in March 2025 that Nigeria had begun vetting candidates to head more than 100 diplomatic missions, about 18 months after President Tinubu recalled all ambassadors worldwide. That report underlined just how long the gap had lasted and how much expectation had built around the eventual restoration of Nigeria’s diplomatic corps. Seen from that wider timeline, the current approval for Nigerian ambassadors is the clearest sign yet that the long reset is nearing operational completion.

Vanguard reported that the Presidency forwarded a list of 65 ambassadorial nominees to the National Assembly toward the end of 2025, and Guardian added that the nominees were screened by the Senate in December 2025. But screening at home was only one part of the process. What remained, and what has slowed final deployment, was the need for each host country to communicate formal acceptance. That is why the latest approval for Nigerian ambassadors from 10 countries is politically important. It moves the conversation from nomination to actual deployment.

It is also significant that some of the countries that have responded are among Nigeria’s most consequential diplomatic and economic partners. The United Kingdom, the United States and France are not minor postings. They sit at the centre of trade, security cooperation, migration talks, education links, development financing, defence dialogue and multilateral influence. So when these capitals grant approval for Nigerian ambassadors, it helps restore a layer of formal state-to-state representation that has been missing at a sensitive time for Nigeria’s foreign relations.

For ordinary readers, this may sound like elite diplomatic housekeeping. It is not. Countries project influence through envoys. Ambassadors are often the first line of engagement on trade access, consular protection, security coordination, investment promotion and crisis management. A chargé d’affaires can keep a mission running, but a substantive ambassador usually carries more political weight and easier access at the highest level. That is why the gradual approval for Nigerian ambassadors should be read as a practical strengthening of Nigeria’s voice abroad, not just as a ceremonial exercise. This is an inference based on the diplomatic role ambassadors play and the fact that Nigeria has operated for an extended period without many substantive envoys.

There is also a domestic political angle. For months, the delay in posting ambassadors fed criticism that Nigeria was underrepresented in key capitals. Monday’s announcement does not end that criticism completely, because responses from many countries are still pending, but it changes the tone of the debate. The government can now point to concrete progress. The approval for Nigerian ambassadors from 10 countries shows that the process is no longer frozen. It is moving, even if not yet complete.

Still, caution is necessary. The ministry has not yet announced the induction date, and not all host countries have responded. So while the latest approval for Nigerian ambassadors is a meaningful diplomatic gain, the story is not finished. Full restoration of Nigeria’s global diplomatic footprint will only be complete when the remaining host countries respond, the Presidency clears the final stage, and the envoys physically take up duty in their assigned posts.

For now, the facts are clear. Nigeria has secured approval for Nigerian ambassadors from 10 countries. The UK, US and France are on that list. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says more approvals are still expected. After a long period of ambassadorial vacancies, that is a notable shift. In diplomatic terms, it may look procedural. In strategic terms, it is Nigeria slowly returning its full voice to the world stage.
