Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has paid tribute to former President Olusegun Obasanjo as the elder statesman marked his 89th birthday, describing him as a leader whose life has been defined by service, courage, and commitment to Nigeria’s unity.

In a goodwill message released on Thursday, Atiku hailed Obasanjo at 89 and reflected on the former president’s enduring contributions to the Nigerian state, noting that his legacy continues to shape national conversations on governance, leadership and development.

“At 89, I celebrate a life that has been defined by service, courage and an enduring commitment to Nigeria,” Atiku said in the message shared through his official social media platform.

The former vice president said Obasanjo’s life story represents a remarkable chapter in Nigeria’s political evolution, adding that the elder statesman’s influence extends far beyond the offices he once held.

Atiku hails Obasanjo at 89 at a time when the former president remains one of the most influential voices in Nigeria’s political and intellectual space.

A Life of Service to the Nigerian State

Born on March 5, 1937, Obasanjo occupies a unique position in Nigeria’s history as one of the few leaders who governed the country both as a military ruler and as a democratically elected president.

He first rose to national leadership in 1976, following the assassination of General Murtala Mohammed, and served as military Head of State until 1979, when he supervised Nigeria’s transition to civilian rule by handing over power to President Shehu Shagari.

Two decades later, Obasanjo returned to power through democratic elections in 1999, becoming Nigeria’s first president of the Fourth Republic after years of military rule. He served two terms, leaving office in 2007 after overseeing major political and economic reforms.

For many observers, these milestones explain why tributes continue to pour in whenever the former leader celebrates another birthday.

Atiku hails Obasanjo at 89 partly because of the former president’s role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic journey and strengthening national institutions.

Atiku and Obasanjo: A Shared Political History

The relationship between Atiku and Obasanjo has been one of the most consequential political partnerships in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.

Atiku served as Vice President under Obasanjo between 1999 and 2007, a period that saw economic reforms, debt relief negotiations, and attempts to restructure Nigeria’s public institutions.

While their political relationship later experienced tensions toward the end of their administration, the birthday message reflects a tone of respect for the elder statesman’s contributions to national development.

Observers note that when Atiku hails Obasanjo at 89, it highlights the enduring influence of political relationships formed during Nigeria’s democratic transition years.

National Tributes for Obasanjo

Atiku is not the only prominent figure celebrating the former president.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also congratulated Obasanjo at 89, describing him as an elder statesman whose “towering influence” continues to shape Nigeria and Africa.

Tinubu acknowledged Obasanjo’s sacrifices and leadership during critical periods of Nigeria’s history, particularly his decision to transfer power to a civilian government in 1979 and his role in restoring democratic rule in 1999.

Across political divides, tributes from leaders and public figures suggest that Obasanjo’s legacy continues to command respect.

The Enduring Voice of an Elder Statesman

Even after leaving office nearly two decades ago, Obasanjo remains a powerful voice in Nigeria’s national discourse.

Through books, public lectures and political commentary, the former president frequently weighs in on governance issues, elections, corruption and national unity.

His outspoken style and willingness to critique successive governments have earned him both admiration and controversy over the years.

Yet, as Atiku hails Obasanjo at 89, many Nigerians see his continued engagement in public affairs as evidence of his enduring commitment to the country.

A Legacy That Continues to Shape Nigeria

For many political observers, Obasanjo’s legacy cannot be separated from Nigeria’s modern political history.

He presided over two pivotal moments:

  • Nigeria’s first peaceful military-to-civilian transition in 1979
  • The rebirth of democratic rule in 1999.

These achievements remain defining chapters in the country’s political journey.

As Atiku hails Obasanjo at 89, the message reflects a broader national sentiment acknowledging the former president’s role in shaping Nigeria’s path over the past five decades.

Atiku concluded his tribute with prayers for the elder statesman’s continued good health and wisdom.

“May God grant him strength and many more years of service to humanity,” he said.
