The family of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has issued a strong public warning over the proliferation of fake Nnamdi Kanu social media accounts, cautioning Nigerians, supporters, and the international community to disregard messages, statements, and fundraising appeals emanating from unauthorised online platforms.

In a statement released on Monday, the Kanu family expressed concern that individuals and groups have been impersonating the detained IPOB leader on social media, using his name, image, and past speeches to mislead the public, sow confusion, and exploit supporters emotionally and financially.

According to the family, fake Nnamdi Kanu social media accounts have become increasingly active across platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, Telegram, and WhatsApp, often claiming to speak on behalf of the IPOB leader or to relay “exclusive” instructions allegedly coming from detention.

Family Raises Alarm Over Impersonation

The family stressed that Nnamdi Kanu, who has remained in detention and is currently facing trial in Nigeria, does not personally operate any social media accounts and has not authorised any individual to issue statements or directives online on his behalf.

“We wish to categorically state that Nnamdi Kanu is not on social media and has not delegated anyone to speak for him through online platforms,” the family said. “Any account claiming to represent him or issue instructions in his name is fake and should be ignored.”

They added that the surge in fake Nnamdi Kanu social media accounts appears to be part of a deliberate attempt to manipulate public opinion, misrepresent his legal position, and create confusion among IPOB supporters and the wider public.

Concerns Over Misinformation and Exploitation

Beyond misinformation, the family warned that some of the fake accounts have been soliciting funds, donations, and personal information from unsuspecting followers under the guise of supporting legal efforts or humanitarian causes linked to Kanu’s detention.

Legal observers note that such activities not only mislead the public but could also expose supporters to fraud, identity theft, and legal complications. The family urged Nigerians to be vigilant and to verify information through credible and official channels before engaging with any online content linked to the IPOB leader.

“This is not just about reputation,” the family said. “These fake Nnamdi Kanu social media accounts are being used to exploit people’s emotions, extract money, and sometimes incite actions that could put lives at risk.”

IPOB Leadership Also Distances Itself

Sources within IPOB’s recognised leadership structure have similarly distanced the organisation from unauthorised online statements attributed to Nnamdi Kanu. They reiterated that official IPOB communications are issued through clearly identified and long-established channels, not anonymous or newly created social media accounts.

The leadership warned that messages calling for protests, sit-at-home orders, or confrontations, allegedly “from Nnamdi Kanu,” but circulated via unverified pages, should be treated with extreme caution.

Analysts say the warning is particularly significant given the history of tension and unrest linked to misinformation during periods of heightened political and security sensitivity in the South-East.

Legal Context and Ongoing Trial

Nnamdi Kanu’s legal case remains one of the most closely watched in Nigeria. His detention and prosecution have attracted local and international attention, with debates around due process, human rights, and national security continuing to dominate public discourse.

Legal experts point out that the existence of fake Nnamdi Kanu social media accounts could complicate matters further by spreading inaccurate claims about court proceedings, judicial decisions, or alleged directives from Kanu, potentially undermining lawful processes.

A senior Abuja-based lawyer noted that “false statements attributed to a defendant in an ongoing trial can have serious legal implications and should not be taken lightly.”

Call for Platform Accountability

The family also called on social media companies to take more decisive action against impersonation accounts, urging platforms to remove pages falsely claiming to represent Nnamdi Kanu and to strengthen verification processes for high-profile figures.

Digital rights advocates argue that impersonation of detained or silenced individuals is a growing problem globally, especially in politically sensitive cases, and requires coordinated responses from platforms, regulators, and civil society.

Public Reaction and Wider Implications

The warning has sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the ease with which fake accounts gain traction. Some supporters admitted they had struggled to distinguish authentic information from fabricated messages circulating in Kanu’s name.

Political commentators say the development underscores a broader challenge facing Nigeria’s digital space, where misinformation can spread rapidly, inflame tensions, and distort public understanding of complex issues.

As debates around IPOB, separatist agitation, and national unity continue, observers believe that clear communication and responsible information sharing are more critical than ever.

Final Warning to Nigerians

In closing, the Kanu family appealed directly to the public:

“We urge Nigerians, supporters, and the international community to ignore all fake Nnamdi Kanu social media accounts. Any genuine communication relating to his case will come through verified legal representatives and recognised channels.”

They added that remaining vigilant against impersonation is essential not only to protect the integrity of Kanu’s case but also to prevent further misinformation and exploitation in an already sensitive national conversation.
