FG approves N4bn take-off grants for Tinubu poly, Epe varsity as the Federal Government moves to strengthen Nigeria’s higher education system and accelerate the operational launch of two newly established tertiary institutions.

The approval, announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, allocates ₦2 billion each to the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal Polytechnic in Abuja and the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe in Lagos State.

The funds are intended to help the institutions establish essential administrative structures, recruit staff, and commence academic activities as part of the government’s effort to expand access to higher education.

According to officials, FG approves N4bn take-off grants for Tinubu poly, Epe varsity in recognition of the strategic importance of the two institutions in advancing science, technology and technical education in Nigeria.

Government expands tertiary education access

Speaking during the inauguration of the pioneer leadership of the institutions in Abuja, the Minister of Education said the initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s education sector.

He explained that the newly created institutions are expected to play a significant role in developing the skilled workforce required for national development.

“Every child in this country deserves access to the highest quality education comparable to global standards,” Alausa said during the ceremony.

The minister noted that the individuals appointed to lead the institutions were carefully selected based on their track record in Nigeria’s education system.

In this context, FG approves N4bn take-off grants for Tinubu poly, Epe varsity as part of a broader national strategy to expand tertiary education capacity and strengthen research and innovation.

Key appointments for the new institutions

The ceremony also saw the formal inauguration of several key officials who will lead the new institutions.

Among those appointed are:
• Prof. Nosiru Onibon – Pioneer Rector, Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal Polytechnic, Abuja
• Prof. Adeola Oshikoya – Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe
• Dr. Angela Ajala – Executive Secretary, National Commission for Colleges of Education

The government emphasised that strong leadership will be essential to shaping the identity and long-term development of the new institutions.

Officials say FG approves N4bn take-off grants for Tinubu poly, Epe varsity not merely as financial support but as a foundation for building world-class academic institutions.

Strategic locations for national development

The two institutions are strategically located to serve different educational and economic needs.

The Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal Polytechnic in Abuja is expected to focus on technical and vocational training that supports industrial development.

Meanwhile, the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe is designed to strengthen science-based education and research in Nigeria.

Education authorities say the location of the Epe university in Lagos State is particularly significant because of the state’s economic importance and its growing technology ecosystem.

In this regard, FG approves N4bn take-off grants for Tinubu poly, Epe varsity to help the institutions quickly establish facilities capable of supporting advanced teaching and research.

Focus on science, technology and innovation

The Federal Government has emphasised that the institutions will focus on emerging fields critical to Nigeria’s future development.

According to the Minister of Education, areas of priority include:
• technological innovation
• renewable energy research
• climate change adaptation
• disaster risk management
• applied science and engineering

Officials say these focus areas align with the government’s ambition to reposition Nigeria as a regional leader in science and technology.

Thus, FG approves N4bn take-off grants for Tinubu poly, Epe varsity as part of a broader effort to produce graduates equipped to tackle modern economic challenges.

Building centres of excellence

The government also expressed hope that the institutions would eventually become centres of excellence in specialised research and technological development.

Higher education experts say Nigeria needs more specialised universities and polytechnics to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals.

The country’s population growth, expanding economy and technological transformation have created increasing pressure on the tertiary education system.

In response, FG approves N4bn take-off grants for Tinubu poly, Epe varsity to ensure the institutions begin operations with a strong foundation.

Education reform under Tinubu administration

The funding decision forms part of a broader push by the federal government to reform the education sector.

Recent policy initiatives have focused on improving university infrastructure, expanding research funding and strengthening technical education.

Education stakeholders say these reforms are critical to addressing Nigeria’s skills gap and preparing young Nigerians for the future economy.

For this reason, FG approves N4bn take-off grants for Tinubu poly, Epe varsity is viewed by many analysts as an important step toward strengthening Nigeria’s tertiary education capacity.

Expectations for the new institutions

With the leadership now in place and funding approved, attention is turning to the operational rollout of the institutions.

Authorities expect both schools to begin building academic programmes, recruiting faculty and establishing partnerships with research institutions.

The success of the project will depend largely on effective leadership, adequate funding and sustained government support.

For now, however, FG approves N4bn take-off grants for Tinubu poly, Epe varsity marks the first major step in launching the two institutions and positioning them to contribute to Nigeria’s education and innovation ecosystem.
