  • FG pledges to strengthen cybersecurity protect Nigerians digital rights

Nigeria’s Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cybersecurity and safeguarding the digital rights of citizens as the country expands its digital economy and reliance on online services.

FG pledges to strengthen cybersecurity, protect Nigerians’ digital rights as authorities emphasise the importance of protecting personal data, privacy and online freedoms in an increasingly interconnected world.

Officials say the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to build a secure digital environment that supports innovation while protecting citizens from cybercrime and online threats.

The pledge was highlighted by Dr. Ayodele Bakare, Assistant Director in the Cybersecurity Department of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), who noted that cybersecurity governance in Nigeria involves collaboration among multiple government institutions responsible for digital regulation and national security.

Rising Importance of Cybersecurity

FG pledges to strengthen cybersecurity, protect Nigerians’ digital rights at a time when cyber threats are becoming more sophisticated globally.

Cybersecurity experts warn that digital infrastructure—ranging from financial systems to communication networks—is increasingly vulnerable to attacks from cybercriminals, hackers and organised crime groups.

Such threats can include:
• identity theft
• data breaches
• financial fraud
• ransomware attacks
• online scams.

Authorities say protecting Nigeria’s digital space requires coordinated efforts involving government agencies, private companies and the general public.

Role of NITDA in Nigeria’s Digital Security

The National Information Technology Development Agency plays a central role in Nigeria’s cybersecurity framework.

Established as the ICT policy implementation agency of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, NITDA is responsible for developing policies and programs that regulate digital activities across the country.

FG pledges to strengthen cybersecurity, protect Nigerians’ digital rights partly through initiatives coordinated by NITDA, including:
• cybersecurity awareness campaigns
• policy development
• regulatory oversight of digital platforms
• collaboration with international cybersecurity organisations.

Officials say these initiatives are designed to strengthen Nigeria’s digital resilience and prevent cyber attacks that could undermine national security or economic stability.

Protecting Citizens’ Digital Rights

Beyond cybersecurity infrastructure, the government says protecting digital rights remains a key priority.

Digital rights refer to the ability of individuals to safely access, use and participate in digital spaces without fear of surveillance, data misuse or online abuse.

FG pledges to strengthen cybersecurity, protect Nigerians’ digital rights by ensuring that citizens’ personal data is properly safeguarded and that digital platforms respect privacy standards.

The Nigeria Data Protection Act, signed into law in 2023, represents one of the country’s most significant steps toward strengthening data privacy regulation.

The law established the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, an independent regulator tasked with enforcing data protection standards across public and private institutions.

Cybercrime as a Growing Threat

Cybercrime remains one of the fastest-growing security challenges worldwide.

In Nigeria, digital fraud has affected individuals, businesses and financial institutions, leading to significant economic losses.

FG pledges to strengthen cybersecurity, protect Nigerians’ digital rights partly to combat these threats and protect users of digital services such as online banking, e-commerce platforms and social media.

Security analysts note that stronger cybersecurity policies are essential for building public trust in digital platforms.

Without trust, experts say, the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy could be undermined.

Strengthening Nigeria’s Digital Economy

Nigeria’s digital economy has expanded rapidly in recent years, driven by increased internet access, mobile technology and digital entrepreneurship.

Government initiatives such as the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme aim to train millions of Nigerians in digital and technical skills to support the country’s technological development.

FG pledges to strengthen cybersecurity, protect Nigerians’ digital rights as part of broader efforts to create a secure environment that encourages investment in Nigeria’s technology sector.

Experts say strong cybersecurity frameworks are essential for attracting international investment and supporting digital innovation.

Collaboration Between Public and Private Sectors

Officials emphasised that cybersecurity cannot be handled by government alone.

The private sector—including banks, telecommunications companies and technology firms—plays a critical role in securing digital infrastructure.

FG pledges to strengthen cybersecurity, protect Nigerians’ digital rights through partnerships that enable information sharing, threat detection and coordinated responses to cyber incidents.

Public Awareness Remains Critical

Authorities also stress the importance of public awareness in combating cyber threats.

Many cyber attacks succeed because users unknowingly expose personal information or fall victim to online scams.

Cybersecurity experts recommend that Nigerians adopt safe digital practices, including:
• using strong passwords
• enabling two-factor authentication
• avoiding suspicious links
• protecting personal information online.

Toward a Secure Digital Future

FG pledges to strengthen cybersecurity, protect Nigerians’ digital rights as part of a broader national strategy aimed at securing Nigeria’s digital future.

Officials say continued investment in cybersecurity infrastructure, policy reforms and public education will be essential for protecting citizens and supporting the country’s digital transformation.

As Nigeria’s digital economy continues to grow, the challenge will be ensuring that innovation and technological progress do not come at the expense of citizens’ privacy and online security.
